Washington, United States – Web Desk: The United States has announced new sanctions on Iran ahead of expected negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear program, targeting more than 30 individuals, entities, and vessels accused of facilitating illegal oil sales and weapons procurement.
According to the US Treasury Department, the sanctions focus on networks involved in what Washington describes as Iran’s illicit petroleum trade and efforts to acquire materials for its weapons programs. Several vessels linked to Iran’s alleged “shadow fleet,” used to transport oil and petroleum products to global markets, were also targeted.
US officials said the measures are aimed at restricting the Iranian government’s financial resources. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Iran uses the financial system to sell oil illegally, conceal revenues, acquire components for nuclear and conventional weapons programs, and support militant groups.
He added that the Trump administration would maintain a policy of “maximum pressure” on Iran to curb its weapons capabilities and alleged support for armed groups.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned that military action could be considered if Iran refuses to reach a nuclear agreement. In his State of the Union address on Tuesday, Trump accused Iran of pursuing “dangerous nuclear ambitions.”
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed cautious optimism about potential talks with the United States.
