Tristan da Cunha, United Kingdom – Web Desk: The British military has conducted a rare and complex humanitarian operation on Tristan da Cunha, one of the world’s most remote inhabited islands, following a suspected hantavirus case.
According to the UK Ministry of Defence, six paratroopers and two medical personnel from the 16 Air Assault Brigade were deployed via parachute after being air-dropped from a Royal Air Force A400M aircraft.
The aircraft took off from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, traveled via Ascension Island, and then continued approximately 3,000 kilometres south to reach Tristan da Cunha. An RAF Voyager aircraft provided mid-air refuelling support during the mission.
Medical teams, oxygen cylinders, and essential supplies were also delivered to provide urgent treatment to an affected patient, a British national who had been aboard a cruise ship where hantavirus-like symptoms were reported.
The patient reportedly developed symptoms on April 28 and is currently in isolation in a stable condition, according to the World Health Organization.
Officials said the operation was necessary due to severe medical limitations on the island, including oxygen shortages and the absence of an airstrip, making sea travel the only regular access route.
Tristan da Cunha, located in the South Atlantic between South Africa and South America, is home to around 200 residents and is considered the most remote inhabited island in the world. Its nearest populated neighbour, Saint Helena, is about 2,400 kilometres away.
The UK Ministry of Defence described the operation as a historic first, with troops parachuting in specifically to deliver emergency medical support in a humanitarian mission.
