Taliban Diplomacy in Europe Faces New Security Concerns

Date:

Brussels, Belgium – Web Desk: The Afghan Taliban administration is facing renewed diplomatic criticism as an Afghan ambassador has opposed efforts to bring Afghan consulates in Europe under Taliban control, warning of potential security risks.

According to a report by the British publication Atlas Press, the Afghan ambassador stationed in Switzerland stated on social media platform X that Taliban attempts to gain control over Afghan consular missions in countries such as Germany are a covert strategy.

The ambassador alleged that threats related to passport cancellations and suspension of consular services are being used to pressure European governments. He further warned that appointing Taliban representatives in European capitals could effectively provide an operational base to an extremist group.

He also expressed concern that if the Taliban gain access to consular databases, they could obtain sensitive information about Afghan citizens living abroad, which may be misused for coercion or blackmail.

Security experts quoted in the report caution that allowing the Taliban to expand diplomatic control under the guise of consular administration could pose long-term risks, potentially turning parts of Europe into safe operational spaces for extremist networks.
