United Nations, New York – Web Desk: The United States has reportedly denied a visa to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, preventing him from attending a key United Nations Security Council meeting in New York.
According to international media reports, the high-level Security Council session will focus on “upholding the principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the global multilateral system” at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East and strained Iran–US relations.
The meeting is being held under the presidency of China, with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi chairing the session. Beijing has described the discussion as significant amid rising geopolitical tensions and challenges to the international order.
Pakistan will be represented by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who is expected to hold meetings with global counterparts and UN officials on the sidelines of the session.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei confirmed that Abbas Araghchi would not be able to travel to New York due to visa complications.
Diplomatic observers noted that as Iran is not a member of the Security Council, Araghchi was invited on a special basis. His absence effectively rules out a potential high-level direct engagement between Iranian and US officials at the meeting.
Chinese officials said the session will emphasize strengthening the role of the United Nations, promoting multilateral diplomacy, and encouraging dialogue to resolve global conflicts.
According to diplomatic sources, Pakistan is expected to support China’s position and underline the importance of the UN Charter and peaceful negotiations in resolving international disputes.
Reports also indicate that a final decision regarding the participation of US Senator Marco Rubio in the meeting has not yet been confirmed.
