Pakistan Hosts Historic US-Iran Talks After 47 Years

Date:

Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has confirmed that Pakistan is actively working to resolve outstanding issues between the United States and Iran, following rare high-level negotiations hosted in Islamabad.

Speaking during a federal cabinet meeting, the prime minister said the talks marked the first time in 47 years that senior delegations from both Washington and Tehran engaged at such a high level. He noted that, historically, contacts between the two countries had remained indirect.

Sharif revealed that both the US and Iranian delegations arrived in Pakistan at Islamabad’s request, describing the development as a significant diplomatic breakthrough. He expressed gratitude to both nations’ leadership for accepting Pakistan’s invitation.

The prime minister said a temporary ceasefire lasting two weeks had been agreed prior to the talks, helping create space for dialogue. He termed Pakistan’s role as mediator “historic,” adding that the opportunity to contribute to regional peace was a matter of national pride.

“War clouds were gathering, but Pakistan was given a chance to help turn the situation towards peace,” he said.

Sharif compared the development with past international agreements, including the Oslo Accords and the Geneva Accords, noting that such breakthroughs often take years to achieve.

According to the prime minister, negotiations between the US and Iran lasted for 21 hours, during which both sides sat together directly — a rare occurrence in decades of strained relations. He confirmed that the ceasefire remains in place, although some issues are still unresolved.

“Efforts are ongoing to address the remaining differences,” Sharif added, reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to facilitating dialogue.

He also said international leaders, including counterparts from Japan and Europe, had acknowledged Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts. Sharif praised the role of Pakistan’s military leadership, particularly the field marshal and his team, for their strategic input in achieving the ceasefire.

While declining to disclose sensitive details, the prime minister emphasized that key national interests and confidential matters would remain protected.
