Pakistan Avoids Energy Crisis Despite Oil Supply Disruptions

Date:

Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: Shehbaz Sharif has said Pakistan has successfully avoided an energy crisis despite disruptions in global oil supplies, crediting the growing share of renewable energy in the country’s power generation mix.

Chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister emphasized the need for long-term planning to ensure sustainable electricity supply and maintain export momentum amid ongoing regional tensions.

Sharif noted that despite challenges in oil supply caused by geopolitical instability, the country’s reliance on renewable energy sources helped stabilize power generation and prevent shortages.

He directed authorities to accelerate work on the battery energy storage system (BESS) project, stressing that solar and other renewable sources represent the future of Pakistan’s energy sector. He also called for a comprehensive national strategy to expand renewable energy capacity.

The prime minister highlighted that exports to Gulf countries have continued despite global uncertainties, attributing this to effective diplomacy. He instructed the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation to arrange additional vessels to boost maritime trade and support export growth.

Officials briefing the meeting said that currently 55% of Pakistan’s electricity is generated from renewable sources, while 45% comes from fossil fuels. Plans are underway to increase renewable energy’s share to 90% over the next decade, reducing reliance on fossil fuels to 10%.

Authorities also noted rising demand for Pakistani agricultural exports in Gulf markets, with continued diplomatic efforts aimed at ensuring smooth trade flows despite regional disruptions.
