London, United Kingdom – Web Desk: UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is reportedly preparing to announce new restrictions on social media use for children under the age of 16, according to media reports.
The proposed clampdown could be unveiled in a pre-election speech expected next week, following a nationwide consultation process that concluded last month, The Independent reported.
The policy under consideration would restrict social media access for users under 16, although some officials have suggested extending the limit to 18, following recommendations from child safety advocates.
Authorities are also reviewing international models, including Australia’s stricter social media regulations introduced in December last year.
UK Skills Minister Baroness Jacqui Smith said the government is evaluating consultation feedback and will present proposals before the summer recess, noting that protecting young people online remains a priority.
In a separate statement at London Tech Week, Prime Minister Starmer called on technology companies to take stronger action against harmful content, including blocking the sharing of nude images involving children within three months.
He rejected the idea that parents must simply accept online risks, arguing that technology platforms should adapt to societal needs rather than the other way around.
Starmer is expected to outline further details in a speech ahead of the Makerfield by-election on June 18, 2026.
