7.8 magnitude earthquake hits Southern Philippines, 32 dead

Date:

Philippines – Web Desk: A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines, leaving at least 32 people dead and more than 100 injured, according to officials and media reports.

The quake hit near the island of Mindanao at around 7:40 a.m. local time, triggering widespread panic and causing multiple buildings to collapse.

Authorities said over 10,000 residents were evacuated from affected areas as emergency response operations were launched immediately.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the earthquake had a shallow depth of around 10 kilometers, intensifying its impact at the surface and increasing structural damage.

Witnesses described strong tremors that forced people to rush out of homes, offices, and schools in fear. Several areas reported partial or complete building collapses as rescue teams worked through debris.

Following the offshore quake, tsunami warnings were issued across parts of Asia, but were later lifted after no significant wave activity was detected. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing as authorities assess the full scale of damage.
