Berlin, Germany – Web Desk: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has reaffirmed the central role of the United States in the NATO alliance, despite ongoing policy differences between Washington and its European partners.
Speaking to international media, Merz said the United States remains the most important partner within NATO, emphasizing that transatlantic cooperation continues to be the cornerstone of European security.
He also clarified that the planned reduction in U.S. troop numbers stationed in Germany is not linked to tensions surrounding Iran, dismissing speculation about a broader geopolitical shift.
“Despite differences of opinion, the United States retains a central position in the NATO alliance,” Merz said.
Meanwhile, economic tensions between Washington and Europe are also drawing attention. U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on automobile imports from the European Union.
In response, Germany’s Ministry for Economic Affairs said negotiations with U.S. officials are ongoing, while coordination with the European Commission continues to address the potential trade impact.
Analysts say the developments highlight a complex phase in transatlantic relations, where strategic military cooperation remains intact despite growing economic and political differences.
