US Objects as Iran Elected Vice President at Nuclear Non-Proliferation Conference

Date:

UNITED NATIONS – Web Desk: Iran has been elected as a Vice President of the conference on the implementation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) at the United Nations, sparking strong objections from the United States.

The election led to a sharp exchange between US and Iranian delegates. US representative Christopher Yeaw called Iran’s election “an insult to the Non-Proliferation Treaty.”

Iranian representative Reza Najafi dismissed the US statement as baseless and politically motivated. “The United States is the only state that has actually used nuclear weapons, and now it wants to act as a mediator for non-proliferation,” Najafi said.

He further noted that Iran is among the countries that have signed the NPT, while Israel has not yet signed the treaty.

Thirty-four Vice Presidents were elected from various countries during the 11th NPT Implementation Conference.
