Trump Considers Heavy Tariffs on India, 60 Countries

Date:

Washington, United States – Web Desk: The administration of President Donald Trump is reportedly considering imposing additional tariffs on imports from India and up to 60 countries, in a move that could significantly impact global trade flows.

According to international media reports, the proposal includes a 12.5% additional tariff on Indian goods, while imports from countries including the United Kingdom, European Union, Canada, and Mexico could face an extra 10% duty.

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said the proposal follows an investigation into global supply chains linked to “forced labour–produced goods.”

The report claims that India is among economies where enforcement mechanisms to prevent such imports are either weak or inconsistently applied. It also suggests that India may serve as a transit hub in certain global supply chains involving such materials.

The Indian government has rejected the allegations and said it is in discussions with Washington, adding that the proposed tariffs are not final and remain under consultation.

U.S. officials said the measures would not be implemented immediately. Public comments are being accepted until July 6, with a formal hearing scheduled for July 7, after which a final decision will be made.

The proposal reportedly targets around 54 countries for a 12.5% tariff, including China, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and Switzerland, while 10% additional duties are suggested for several other major trading partners.

The development comes as U.S. trade negotiators are currently in New Delhi attempting to finalize a bilateral trade agreement, with the proposed tariffs potentially complicating ongoing discussions.
