USS George Washington loads bunker-buster bombs as US weighs Iran strikes

Date:

The reported weapons buildup comes as the Trump administration considers renewed military action against Iran, while diplomatic efforts to prevent escalation continue.

WASHINGTON: The United States has reportedly loaded standoff land-attack missiles and bunker-buster bombs aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington as its military prepares options for possible renewed strikes against Iran, according to reporting by The Wall Street Journal.

The carrier is operating in the Arabian Sea, where US forces have been deployed amid the continuing confrontation with Tehran. The report said a large shipment of munitions had arrived aboard the vessel, signalling preparations for a potentially expanded bombing campaign.

The development comes as the Trump administration weighs its next steps in the conflict, while diplomatic efforts continue to prevent another escalation.

Weapons could be used against hardened targets

According to the reports, the shipment includes standoff land-attack missiles and bunker-buster bombs. Such weapons are designed for different roles: standoff missiles can strike targets from a distance, while bunker-buster munitions are designed to penetrate hardened structures before detonating.

These capabilities could provide US forces with additional options against fortified military infrastructure and underground facilities. However, the presence of these weapons does not establish that an attack has been ordered or that any particular Iranian target has been selected.

US military preparing options for possible strikes

The weapons shipment comes amid reports that US officials are preparing a range of military options for President Donald Trump.

A separate Wall Street Journal report published on October 24 said Trump had been briefed on options that include attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities and infrastructure, as well as possible operations involving Iranian-held islands. Officials cited in the report said no final decision had been made.

Trump has previously said the United States would not resume attacks on Iran before the November 3 midterm elections, citing discussions with Tehran. However, US forces have continued preparations, and the administration has maintained military pressure on Iran.

The situation therefore reflects military readiness for possible future action rather than confirmation that a new bombing campaign is imminent.

More naval forces moving into the region

The United States has also been increasing its military presence in the Middle East. According to The Wall Street Journal, two aircraft-carrier strike groups were in the region, with a third on its way from the Pacific. An additional amphibious assault ship carrying Marines was also being deployed.

The expanded deployment would give Washington more options if the president authorises further operations. It also comes amid heightened security concerns following reported threats against US personnel and continuing tensions around Gulf shipping routes.

Diplomatic efforts continue amid escalation fears

Regional mediators are seeking to revive negotiations to prevent renewed fighting. The military buildup has nevertheless raised concerns that the conflict could intensify if diplomatic efforts fail.

Iran has warned that it would retaliate against renewed US attacks. Any further military action could also affect regional security, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and global energy markets.
