Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday dismissed the Punjab government’s appeal seeking the cancellation of PTI President and former Chief Minister Pervez Elahi’s bail in a case related to illegal recruitments in Punjab .
Court Directs Trial Court to Expedite Proceedings
During the hearing, Chief Justice Yahya Afridi observed that the trial court could cancel bail if the accused failed to appear before it. He questioned why the accused were not appearing for trial despite multiple adjournments.
Government counsel told the court that the accused had sought adjournments 18 times. However, PTI’s counsel Ali Zafar argued that no charges had been framed against Elahi, nor had any evidence been presented in court. He noted that his client had already spent a year in jail .
“No One Can Be Allowed to Take Advantage of the Law”
Chief Justice Yahya Afridi remarked that presenting evidence is the prosecution’s responsibility and that the accused must appear before the trial court. He further stated that no one can be allowed to take unfair advantage of the law.
The Supreme Court directed the trial court to hear the case within two weeks .
