Washington, United States – Web Desk: US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the Strait of Hormuz has been reopened and maritime traffic is expected to resume shortly, following a ceasefire in the region.
Speaking at a Pentagon press briefing, Hegseth said the agreement ensures that Iran will “never be able to develop nuclear weapons.” He added that Iran would either hand over its enriched uranium or it would be removed through other means.
Hegseth described the recent military campaign, dubbed “Operation Epic Fury,” as a major success, claiming it significantly degraded Iran’s missile, drone, and defense capabilities. He said hundreds of strikes targeted key infrastructure, including military and industrial sites.
According to US officials, the operation aimed to neutralize Iran’s strategic capabilities and create conditions for a lasting ceasefire. Hegseth added that US forces would remain in the region to ensure compliance with the agreement.
Separately, US military officials said the operation targeted Iran’s naval assets and defense systems, while emphasizing that the ceasefire represents a “pause” and forces remain prepared for further escalation if necessary.
The developments come amid heightened global focus on energy security, as the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is expected to stabilize oil markets and restore critical shipping routes.
