Gul Plaza Tragedy: Traders Demand Murder Case Against Govt

Karachi traders reject govt response, warn protests if compensation isn’t paid immediately

Karachi, Pakistan | Web Desk: Leaders of the All Karachi Traders Alliance have strongly criticized the government’s handling of the Gul Plaza fire tragedy, demanding that a murder case be registered against the government for alleged negligence.

Speaking to the media, trader leader Atiq Mir expressed outrage over what he called criminal mismanagement, questioning why helicopters were used for VIP movement instead of firefighting efforts. He said those responsible should be booked, not protected.

Alliance Chairman Hakim Shah accused the Sindh government and KMC of incompetence, rejecting official claims that 90% of work has been completed. “Not even 10% progress is visible,” he said, demanding a transparent investigation.

Another leader, Hakim Shehzad, said political blame games were being played while affected traders were left helpless. He warned that if compensation is not paid within days-not months—traders will take to the streets, even if it means shutting down markets nationwide.

Trader representative Rizwan Irfan added that despite over a week passing, debris has not been cleared and FIRs remain registered against “unknown persons.” He criticized firefighting arrangements and called the announced Rs500,000 compensation insufficient, claiming losses exceed Rs15 billion, especially with Eid approaching.

The traders demanded immediate financial relief, accountability for those involved, and strict punishment for all responsible officials.
