ECP Seeks Expanded Powers to Verify Lawmakers’ Asset Declarations

Date:

The Election Commission of Pakistan proposes legal amendments to independently verify lawmakers’ asset statements and strengthen transparency in the electoral process.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — WEB DESK: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has proposed expanding its legal authority to independently verify the asset declarations submitted by lawmakers, seeking stronger oversight to improve transparency and accountability in the country’s electoral system.

According to officials, the commission has recommended amendments that would empower it to scrutinize the financial disclosures of members of parliament and other elected representatives more effectively.

At present, lawmakers are required to submit annual statements detailing their assets and liabilities. However, the ECP has argued that its existing legal framework does not provide sufficient authority to independently verify the accuracy of the information submitted.

The proposed changes are intended to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process by ensuring that asset declarations can be examined through a more robust verification mechanism.

Election officials believe the reforms would enhance transparency, promote accountability and help ensure compliance with election laws governing financial disclosures by public office holders.

If approved through the legislative process, the proposed amendments would grant the ECP greater authority to cross-check declarations with relevant government institutions and investigate discrepancies where necessary.

The move forms part of broader discussions on electoral reforms in Pakistan aimed at improving governance, strengthening democratic institutions and increasing public trust in the electoral process.
