UNITED NATIONS – Web Desk: Germany has failed to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, with Portugal and Austria winning the two seats allocated for Western European and Other States (WEOG) group, according to election results.
In the vote held in the UN General Assembly, Germany received 104 votes among 193 member states, while Portugal secured 134 and Austria obtained 131. Following the results, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that Germany’s clear positions on Ukraine and Israel may have prevented some countries from supporting its bid.
The Foreign Minister noted that Germany has always taken a clear stance on important international issues, though not all member states agree with these policies. He also acknowledged that Germany’s special historical responsibility toward Israel in the Middle East conflict may have cost it some votes. Germany has previously served as a non-permanent Security Council member six times but failed to secure the required support this time.
Zimbabwe was elected unopposed for the African seat, while Trinidad and Tobago won the Caribbean seat. Kyrgyzstan defeated the Philippines with 143 votes against 49 for the Asian seat. All newly elected members will join the Security Council for a two-year term starting January 2027.
