Washington, United States – Web Desk: A report by a US newspaper claims that growing concerns over a possible US withdrawal from NATO have prompted European countries to accelerate efforts to build an alternative defence framework.
According to the report, European nations are now working on a concept referred to as a “European NATO,” aimed at strengthening Europe’s ability to manage command and control operations independently while maintaining the broader alliance structure.
The shift has been influenced by changes in German defence policy and rising uncertainty over Washington’s long-term commitment. Statements by former US President Donald Trump regarding NATO, along with wider transatlantic disagreements, have added to European concerns about security stability.
The report also highlights tensions linked to differing approaches on global conflicts, including the Iran issue, which have further strained US-Europe relations. In response, European states are increasing investment in air defence systems, intelligence capabilities, logistics, and military command structures.
Plans under consideration reportedly include the reinstatement of compulsory military service in some countries and expansion of defence production capacity. However, major challenges remain, particularly replacing US nuclear deterrence as well as satellite and intelligence infrastructure.
Preliminary discussions between France and Germany are also underway regarding an expanded European nuclear defence framework, which is seen as one of the most sensitive aspects of the proposed strategy.
