Zanjan, Iran – Web Desk: At least 14 members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were killed in an explosion while attempting to defuse unexploded ordnance near the city of Zanjan in northwestern Iran, according to Iranian media reports.
The incident occurred during a clearance operation involving unexploded munitions believed to have been dropped during recent hostilities. Iranian authorities said the team was engaged in disposing of dormant explosives when one device detonated unexpectedly.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed that the personnel were involved in a demining operation aimed at clearing remnants of war, including cluster munitions and aerial explosives left behind in previous strikes.
Reports said the explosion happened in an area where unexploded bombs had been discovered following earlier military activity. Officials noted that such ordnance can remain highly dangerous for long periods and may detonate during handling.
Iranian security-linked media outlets confirmed the casualties and said emergency operations were ongoing in the affected area.
The incident highlights the continued risks posed by unexploded wartime ordnance even after active hostilities have paused, with clearance operations remaining hazardous for military personnel.
