UK Court Upholds Ban on Palestine Action, Rights Groups Protest

Date:

London, United Kingdom – Web Desk: A British appeals court has upheld the government’s decision to designate Palestine Action as a “terrorist organization,” a ruling that has drawn sharp condemnation from two of the world’s leading human rights groups.

The Court of Appeal’s decision on Tuesday affirmed the Home Office’s proscription order against the activist group, which has been involved in high-profile protests against arms trade with Israel. The ruling has sparked widespread concern among civil liberties advocates and legal experts across the United Kingdom.

Human Rights Watch described the judgment as “devastating,” warning that labeling a protest group as terrorist creates an extraordinary situation where individuals could face arrest merely for holding placards or expressing solidarity.

“Equating peaceful protest and political expression with terrorism sets a dangerous precedent for democratic values and fundamental human rights,” the organization said in an official statement.

Amnesty International echoed these concerns, expressing deep disappointment over the court’s decision. The organization argued that proscribing Palestine Action under counter-terrorism laws represents a misuse of legislation that could have severe repercussions for basic freedoms.

According to Amnesty, the ruling threatens to undermine fundamental liberties related to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and political participation. The case has become a subject of intense debate within political and legal circles across Britain, with human rights organizations now calling on the government and judiciary to reconsider the decision.
