Washington, United States – Web Desk: US President Donald Trump has indicated he is open to direct communication with Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te, marking a potential shift in US diplomatic engagement with the self-governed island.
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Trump said he is willing to “talk to everyone” and that his administration is working on managing the Taiwan situation carefully. His remarks came after returning from a state visit to China, which he described as successful.
The comments have drawn attention because any direct contact between US and Taiwanese presidents remains highly sensitive under longstanding diplomatic norms established after Washington recognized Beijing in 1979.
Trump was asked whether he would speak to President Lai before finalizing a US$14 billion arms package for Taiwan approved by Congress. He responded that he would consider discussions, adding that his administration is handling the situation well.
The development comes amid heightened US-China tensions, with Beijing strongly opposing any official contact between Washington and Taipei. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly warned against foreign involvement.
China’s Ministry of Defense has previously accused Taiwan’s leadership of seeking independence with external support, while Taiwan maintains that it is an independent democracy and continues to strengthen its defense cooperation with the United States.
Analysts say any direct engagement between Trump and Taiwan’s president could significantly increase diplomatic friction between Washington and Beijing.
