US Iran War Cost Tops $47 Billion as Weapons Losses Mount

Date:

New Pentagon estimates put the US military’s Iran war bill more than 25% above its July estimate, with billions needed to replace munitions and equipment.

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES — WEB DESK: The cost of the United States’ war against Iran has exceeded $47 billion, with the latest Pentagon estimates showing a rise of more than 25% from the figure reported in July.

The updated estimate, based on Pentagon data reviewed by Reuters and reported on October 28, 2026, puts the financial burden of the conflict well above the previous $37.5 billion estimate. The figures cover operational expenses, weapons used during military operations and the replacement of lost equipment.

Munitions Replacement Accounts for the Largest Share

More than $29 billion is projected to be needed to replace munitions expended during the conflict. A further $6 billion-plus is estimated for replacing military equipment and platform losses, including aircraft and drones.

The overall operational bill also covers expenses such as flight operations, logistics and cyber support. However, the estimate does not clearly account for the full cost of repairing US military bases damaged by Iranian missile and drone attacks. Those repairs could add substantially to the final financial burden.

The latest figures highlight the expense of sustaining a prolonged military campaign and replenishing sophisticated weapons inventories. The scale of munitions consumption has also raised questions about the pace at which the US military can restore its stockpiles.

War Costs Rise Amid Uncertainty Over Future Operations

The conflict began in February 2026, when the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran. An April ceasefire eased the fighting temporarily, but disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz and subsequent US pressure on Iran have left the situation unresolved.

President Donald Trump has indicated that further military action remains possible if negotiations fail. US officials have also discussed plans for renewed operations, although any future escalation would depend on decisions by the administration.

The rising cost has become a significant issue for US lawmakers as Congress considers military funding and the broader economic consequences of the conflict. Higher energy costs have added to concerns about the war’s impact on households and businesses.

The $47 billion estimate does not represent the final cost of the conflict. Additional operations, equipment replacement and repairs to damaged military facilities could increase the total further.
