Washington, USA – Web Desk: Following the US Supreme Court’s ruling that declared President Donald Trump’s additional tariffs on foreign countries illegal, Trump issued a defiant response, asserting his authority over trade actions.
On Friday, the Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, struck down the tariffs, stating that the law under which Trump acted—the National Emergency Economic Powers Act—does not grant the president the authority to impose additional duties on other countries.
Reacting to the decision, Trump called the ruling “very disappointing” and criticized specific justices. He claimed that foreign nations celebrating the verdict would not maintain their “happiness for long” and insisted he retains the power to act, though he acknowledged he cannot collect tariff funds under the court’s ruling.
Trump further stated that the court had been influenced by foreign interests and promised alternative trade measures, including the imposition of a 10% global tariff beyond other existing duties. He emphasized that Section 301 tariffs tied to national security would remain intact without congressional approval.
When questioned about whether the US must refund tariff revenues, Trump said legal battles would be necessary to determine the outcome. Experts suggest the administration may seek legislative changes rather than returning collected tariffs.
This ruling represents a significant setback for Trump’s trade agenda, which heavily relied on tariffs as an economic and political tool.
