Ahmedabad, India – Web Desk: South Africa handed India a heavy 76-run defeat in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Super 8 Group 1 match, ending India’s long unbeaten streak in the tournament.
After winning the toss in Ahmedabad, South Africa opted to bat first and posted 187 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. David Miller scored 63, Dewald Brevis made 45, and Tristan Stubbs added 44 runs to power the South African innings.
For India, Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets while Arshdeep Singh claimed two.
Chasing a target of 188, India’s batting lineup collapsed under pressure. Shivam Dube top-scored with 42, while Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav scored 18 runs each. No other batter made a significant contribution as India were bowled out for 111 in the 19th over.
South Africa’s bowlers dominated, with Marco Jansen taking four wickets, Keshav Maharaj three, and Corbin Bosch two.
This was India’s first loss after 12 consecutive wins in the T20 World Cup. The defending champions had remained unbeaten since the 2024 World Cup, with their previous defeat coming in the 2022 semifinal against England.
The 76-run loss is India’s biggest defeat by runs in T20 World Cup history and their second-largest loss in the T20 format overall, after an 80-run defeat to New Zealand in 2019.
