Sydney, Australia – Web Desk: Australian selectors have come under criticism after senior batter Steven Smith was overlooked in Australia’s final group match against Oman, sparking debate over his treatment during the tournament.
Despite strong performances in the Big Bash League, Smith was initially left out of Australia’s World Cup squad and later added only as a reserve player. He formally joined the squad ahead of a crucial match against Sri Lanka, a game Australia lost, ending their chances of qualifying for the Super 8 stage.
In Australia’s final group match against Oman on Friday, Smith was again not included in the playing XI. He was briefly used as a substitute fielder for two overs near the boundary, where his only visible action was returning a dropped towel from the field of play.
Fans on social media criticised the selectors, describing the handling of Smith as disrespectful toward one of Australia’s most experienced batters.
