New Delhi, India – Web Desk: A new administrative appointment in India’s northeastern state of Manipur has triggered debate and concerns about escalating tensions amid ongoing ethnic unrest.
According to The Economic Times, the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appointed retired Lieutenant General L Nishi Kanta Singh as adviser to the Chief Minister of Manipur. The decision comes at a time when the state continues to face deep ethnic divisions between the Meitei Hindu community and the Kuki-Zo tribes.
Manipur has been gripped by violence since a “Tribal Solidarity March” in 2023, with ethnic clashes reportedly leaving more than 260 people dead, over 1,500 injured, and more than 60,000 displaced. Security forces remain heavily deployed to restore order.
Some analysts and observers warn that the appointment could further inflame tensions in a deeply divided society, urging the government to take inclusive steps to rebuild trust and promote reconciliation.
Government sources, however, argue that bringing in an experienced former military officer aims to improve governance and strengthen law and order in the troubled state.
