Sindh Lawyers Reject 27th Amendment, Announce Protest Rally on Nov 14

Date:

Hyderabad (Report by Ghulam Hussain): Lawyers across Sindh have united in strong opposition to the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment, declaring it a direct attack on the Constitution, judicial independence, and the integrity of Sindh.

The All Sindh Lawyers Action Committee convened a large convention in Hyderabad, attended by prominent legal figures including Advocate Israr Chang, K.B. Laghari, Aamir Waraich, Altaf Sachal Awan, Haseeb Jamali, Haq Nawaz Talpur, Sajad Chandio, Ashraf Samoon, Mir Ahmed Mangrio, Ashar Majid Khokhar, Babar Masood, Rasool Memon, Syed Tariq Shah, Ali Akbar Brohi, Javed Baloch, Rashid Rajar, Liaquat Sehto, Mian Taj Muhammad Kirio, Noorul Haq Qureshi, and Anees Rehman.

A significant number of female lawyers also participated, chanting slogans such as “No to the Amendment” and “Sindh will not be divided.” Speakers at the convention condemned the amendment as a “midnight assault” on the Constitution, asserting that it would paralyze the judicial system, enable the appointment of partisan judges, and reduce Sindh’s share in the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award.
Advocate Israr Chang, General Secretary of the High Court Bar and Secretary of the Action Committee, announced a protest rally on November 14, starting from the Hyderabad courts to Qasimabad bypass, culminating in a sit-in at Wadhu Wah. He further declared a complete boycott of court proceedings across Sindh on the same day.
Speakers warned that the amendment was part of a broader conspiracy to weaken provincial autonomy and centralize power. They argued that the creation of constitutional courts with handpicked judges would hollow out the judicial system and marginalize Sindh’s voice in national affairs. They also criticized the federal government for repeatedly introducing amendments that serve political interests, calling it a blatant violation of constitutional principles.
“This amendment is not just unconstitutional—it’s a calculated move to dismantle the judiciary and divide Sindh,” said one speaker. “We will resist it with full force. If the amendment is not withdrawn, we will return to the streets.”
The lawyers emphasized their historical role in defending Sindh’s rights, referencing past struggles such as the movement against controversial canal projects. They vowed to continue their fight to protect the Constitution, judicial independence, and the interests of the people of Sindh. The convention concluded with a unified call for mass mobilization and legal resistance, warning that any attempt to impose the amendment would be met with fierce opposition from the legal community.
