Saudi Arabia Pursues International Maritime Coalition to Protect Red Sea Shipping

Date:

Riyadh is consulting dozens of countries on a proposed coalition as security concerns grow over attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — WEB DESK: Saudi Arabia is stepping up efforts to establish a new international maritime coalition aimed at safeguarding commercial shipping in the Red Sea, as regional security concerns continue to rise.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, Saudi officials are consulting with multiple countries to develop a coordinated framework for protecting international shipping routes. However, the coalition’s final structure, participating members, and operational responsibilities have yet to be determined.

Consultations Underway

According to Reuters, citing two sources familiar with the matter, Saudi Arabia is in talks with dozens of countries regarding the proposed initiative. Discussions remain ongoing over the coalition’s mandate, scope, and operational responsibilities.

The consultations come amid increasing attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, which have heightened concerns over maritime security and the uninterrupted flow of global trade.

Regional Security Concerns

The proposed coalition follows a rise in attacks claimed by Yemen’s Houthi movement (Ansar Allah) targeting vessels operating in the Red Sea. Saudi Arabia and other regional governments have expressed concern over the impact of the attacks on international navigation and regional stability.

Yemen Government Raises New Allegations

Separately, Yemen’s Information Minister alleged that the Houthi movement is planning to impose toll charges on ships passing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. He described the alleged plan as a dangerous development that could provide financial support for the group’s military activities.

The Houthis have not publicly responded to the allegation.

Background

The initiative follows recent tensions after the Houthis announced what they described as a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia and claimed responsibility for attacks on two Saudi oil tankers.

In response, the Saudi-led coalition previously said it carried out strikes against Houthi military positions in Yemen’s Al Hudaydah Governorate.

The latest proposal reflects growing international concern over the security of one of the world’s busiest maritime trade corridors.
