Gen Z and Millennials Drive New Investor Growth at Pakistan Stock Exchange

Date:

Pakistan’s stock market records a 48% annual increase in investors as digital trading platforms attract younger generations and expand retail participation.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s stock market is attracting a growing number of young investors, with participation increasing by 48 per cent over the past year as Gen Z and millennials turn to digital investment platforms.

Data available up to September 2026 shows that the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) recorded 656,218 unique investor identification numbers, compared with the previous year’s level. The figures indicate growing interest in equity investments among individual investors.

Between January and September 2026, a total of 193,147 new investment accounts were opened, including 25,281 in September alone.

The growing participation reflects a generational shift in Pakistan’s financial market, with younger people increasingly using mobile applications, digital brokerage services and banking integrations to access stock trading.

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) is also working to expand investor participation by improving digital access and financial education. Its chairman, Dr Kabir Ahmed Sidhu, has highlighted the role of technology and transparent market information in helping young investors understand investment opportunities and associated risks.

The initiative also aims to address the unequal representation of women in the stock market. Men account for approximately 87 per cent of new investment accounts, while women represent only 13 per cent.

The regulator has set a target of increasing Pakistan’s investor base to 2.5 million and plans to introduce financial education programmes in educational institutions across the country.

A mobile-based investment application is also under development. It is expected to offer a simplified six-step account-opening process, using identity and mobile verification alongside banking information for customer verification.

Pakistan’s stock market has experienced significant growth during the same period. The KSE-100 Index gained approximately 43.5 per cent during fiscal year 2025-26, closing at 180,302 points on June 30, compared with 125,627 points a year earlier. It also reached a record closing high of 189,167 points in January 2026.

However, market growth does not guarantee future returns. Financial experts have emphasised the importance of investor education, responsible decision-making and understanding the difference between long-term investment and short-term speculation.

The increasing participation of younger investors could broaden domestic investment opportunities and provide Pakistani businesses with additional access to capital through the stock market.
