Moscow warns attack on Bushehr nuclear facility could trigger Chernobyl-like disaster
Moscow, Russia | Web Desk: Russia has announced it is prepared to evacuate its personnel from Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant if the security situation deteriorates further.
Alexey Likhachev, head of Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom, said Moscow is closely monitoring developments and is coordinating with the Russian Foreign and Defence Ministries to ensure staff safety if evacuation becomes necessary.
Speaking to Russian state media, Likhachev recalled that during last year’s US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, the Bushehr plant was not targeted. He emphasized, however, that any attack on Bushehr could have catastrophic consequences similar to the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster in Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously confirmed that hundreds of Russian nuclear experts are currently working at the Bushehr facility.
