Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was released after being detained outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence during nationwide protests over India’s education system, as demonstrations entered their third consecutive day.
New Delhi, India – Web Desk: The protests, led by the social media-driven Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement, have emerged as one of the most significant public challenges to the Modi government since its re-election in 2024. Protesters are demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and sweeping reforms to India’s examination system.
Gandhi staged a sit-in protest on Tuesday, accusing the government of ignoring students’ concerns and condemning the police response to demonstrations in New Delhi. He called for accountability and reforms to restore public confidence in the country’s education system.
Responding to growing criticism, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the government remains committed to improving the examination process.
“We owe students answers, reforms, and accountability,” Pradhan said in a social media statement, adding that the government is determined to deliver meaningful changes.
The demonstrations turned violent after clashes erupted between protesters and security forces. Police said 60 civilians and 118 security personnel were injured during the unrest, which saw protesters throwing stones while police responded with tear gas and baton charges.
Protests also spread to Mumbai and Bengaluru, drawing hundreds of participants. Meanwhile, hundreds of demonstrators remained camped at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, with the CJP pledging to continue its anti-government campaign.
The movement has rapidly gained millions of followers since its launch in May, fueled by public anger over a series of examination controversies, including the leak of a major medical entrance exam paper affecting more than two million candidates and disputes surrounding online evaluation of high school examinations.
The protests have intensified scrutiny of India’s education system and increased pressure on the government to introduce comprehensive reforms.
