Punjab Braces for Severe Heatwave, Temperatures to Soar

Date:

Lahore, Pakistan – Web Desk: Punjab is expected to face an intense heatwave this summer, with temperatures forecast to rise significantly above seasonal averages, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and international climate assessments.

Officials warn that from late April through June, much of the province could experience prolonged periods of extreme heat, with southern regions likely to see temperatures surge 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal levels. In some areas, temperatures may exceed 45°C, raising concerns over public health, agriculture, and energy demand.

The PMD’s seasonal outlook indicates that temperatures between March and May 2026 will remain consistently higher than average. April is projected to be 1–2°C warmer than usual, while May could see a rise of up to 3°C. By June, extreme heat conditions are expected to intensify across urban and rural areas alike.

Major cities, including Lahore, are likely to experience heightened heat due to the “urban heat island effect,” driven by concrete infrastructure, heavy traffic, and air pollution. Environmental experts say this effect can make cities significantly hotter than surrounding rural areas.

Meteorological authorities define a heatwave as temperatures exceeding 42°C for consecutive days. Experts warn that increasing frequency and duration of heatwaves in Punjab are linked to climate change, reduced rainfall, deforestation, and persistent high-pressure systems.

Authorities have advised residents to take precautionary measures, including avoiding outdoor exposure during peak hours, staying hydrated, and wearing light clothing. Hospitals and emergency services have also been urged to prepare for potential heatstroke cases.

Environmental agencies recommend expanding urban tree cover, strengthening early warning systems, and ensuring adequate water supply to mitigate the impact of extreme weather conditions.

Experts caution that without long-term climate adaptation strategies, heatwaves in Punjab could become more severe in the coming years, affecting human health, food security, and economic stability.
