PM Shehbaz Orders Financial Aid, Faster Relief for Flood Victims

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered financial assistance for families affected by recent monsoon rains and floods across Pakistan and directed authorities to accelerate rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations as another spell of severe weather threatens parts of the country.

Chairing a high-level meeting on the impact of the 2026 monsoon, the prime minister directed that financial assistance be provided to the families of people who lost their lives in rain- and flood-related incidents.

He also ordered compensation for owners of homes that were either completely or partially damaged by flooding and heavy rainfall.

The meeting reviewed the scale of damage across the country as well as ongoing relief operations by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and provincial disaster-management agencies.

Shehbaz directed the relevant authorities to restore electricity networks and damaged roads in flood-hit areas as quickly as possible, stressing that rehabilitation work should proceed alongside immediate rescue and relief activities.

An official government account of the meeting said the prime minister described assistance to flood-affected communities as a national responsibility and ordered federal ministers and secretaries to visit affected areas to personally monitor relief and recovery efforts.

Aid Ordered for Areas Still Cut Off

The prime minister instructed authorities to ensure food, essential supplies and other relief goods reach communities that have remained inaccessible because of damaged roads, flooding or difficult terrain.

He also directed the NDMA and Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) to remain fully prepared for further rainfall and possible flooding.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast another spell of rain, wind and thunderstorms across upper and central regions, warning that heavy downpours could trigger urban flooding, flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.

The forecast covers parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir, while authorities have also been monitoring river flows and reservoirs.

The prime minister ordered early warnings to be issued to communities at risk from upcoming weather systems and called for continuous monitoring of vulnerable areas.

Relief and Infrastructure Restoration Reviewed

Officials briefed the meeting on evacuation, relief distribution and infrastructure restoration in Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the briefing cited in the supplied government-linked report, 615 tonnes of relief supplies have so far been dispatched to monsoon-affected areas nationwide, with additional consignments being arranged.

Authorities also said residents had been moved to safer locations in affected areas where evacuation was required.

The meeting was informed that work was underway to restore damaged infrastructure, including roads and electricity networks, while early-warning systems in northern regions had enabled authorities to evacuate residents in advance of some flood threats.

The federal government has been strengthening monsoon coordination for several weeks. In July, Shehbaz directed the NDMA to maintain close coordination with provincial governments and PDMAs and was briefed on efforts to make early-warning systems fully operational.

Authorities Brace for Further Rain

The latest government directive comes as weather authorities warn that Pakistan remains exposed to additional rain-related emergencies.

The PMD said monsoon currents and a westerly weather system were expected to produce heavy rain in several regions through the weekend. It warned of possible urban flooding in cities including Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar, as well as flash flooding and landslides in mountainous areas.

The Punjab disaster authority has also issued alerts for the latest monsoon spell, while river levels are being closely monitored.

Shehbaz directed federal and provincial agencies to maintain readiness rather than wait for conditions to deteriorate before responding.

The prime minister separately ordered officials to assess damaged water systems, roads and electricity infrastructure and begin rehabilitation without unnecessary delay.

An official account of a related flood-response review said Shehbaz had stressed that while rescue and relief were the immediate priority, rehabilitation should begin simultaneously.

Government Emphasises Faster Recovery

The government says its immediate focus is on protecting lives, delivering relief to isolated communities and restoring essential services.

The prime minister also instructed federal officials to travel to affected districts and directly assess damage rather than rely solely on administrative reports.

The latest directives expand the government’s response from emergency evacuation and relief distribution toward compensation and longer-term recovery for families whose homes and livelihoods have been affected.

Further details on the amount of financial assistance, eligibility requirements and payment mechanism for affected families were not specified in the initial announcement.
