Pakistan’s Finance Minister Aurangzeb Departs for High-Level IMF and World Bank Meetings in Washington

Date:

ISLAMABAD / WASHINGTON : Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Finance, Mohammad Aurangzeb, has departed for the United States to attend the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. His visit comes at a critical juncture as Pakistan seeks to stabilize its economy amid ongoing structural reforms and climate-related challenges.

During his visit, Aurangzeb is scheduled to hold key meetings with senior officials from the IMF, World Bank, International Finance Corporation (IFC), and Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA). A major highlight will be a one-on-one meeting with Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank, where Pakistan’s economic priorities and development needs will be discussed.

Key Focus Areas of the Visit:

  • Policy-Level Talks with IMF: Aurangzeb will engage in negotiations to finalize new economic targets for the upcoming fiscal period.
  • Post-Flood Economic Adjustments: Pakistan is seeking flexibility in growth and tax targets due to the economic fallout from recent devastating floods. Any changes will require approval from the IMF Executive Board.
  • Agricultural Income Tax Delay: Provinces have requested more time to implement this tax, citing severe damage to the agricultural sector.
  • Wheat Procurement Reform: The IMF has asked Pakistan to revise its wheat procurement policy, encouraging private sector participation and open market mechanisms.
  • Governance and Transparency: Discussions include mandatory asset declarations for public officials and the delayed publication of the Corruption and Governance Diagnostic Assessment Report.
  • Structural Benchmarks: Pakistan has requested leniency on certain IMF-imposed reforms to expedite a staff-level agreement.

Virtual negotiations between Pakistan and the IMF are ongoing, with both sides working to resolve four major policy issues. The outcome of Aurangzeb’s visit is expected to shape the next phase of Pakistan’s economic recovery and engagement with international financial institutions.
