Karachi, Pakistan – Web Desk: Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi has announced that Pakistan is set to soon begin work on a new railway link with Iran, describing it as part of broader regional connectivity plans aimed at extending rail networks toward Europe.
Speaking at an event in Karachi, where he attended the inauguration ceremony of a railway-affiliated international school, the minister said the project reflects Pakistan’s growing focus on regional transport and trade connectivity.
He stated that the Karachi Circular Railway remains the responsibility of the Sindh government, while the federal government is working on major railway upgrades and expansion projects.
Hanif Abbasi said the government plans to outsource several railway schools, hospitals, and other institutions to improve efficiency. He also mentioned ongoing efforts toward digitisation of Pakistan Railways, which he said would become operational in phases.
The minister highlighted the importance of the Rohri–Karachi railway track, calling it one of the oldest and most critical routes in the country, originally built between 1861 and 1868. He said a major upgrade of the 480-kilometre track is planned with an estimated cost of around $2 billion.
Abbasi further stated that Pakistan holds strategic importance in the region, noting growing international attention from countries including Russia, China, Iran, the United States, and Gulf states.
He also referenced Pakistan’s diplomatic role in easing tensions between regional countries, including efforts to improve relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Officials say the proposed railway expansion is part of broader infrastructure development aimed at strengthening trade links and improving regional connectivity across South and Central Asia.
