Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: A member of Pakistan’s National Assembly from the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) has submitted a constitutional amendment bill seeking a nationwide ban on alcohol, including for non-Muslims.
JUI lawmaker Naeema Kishwar tabled the proposed amendment to Article 37, aiming to remove the term “non-Muslim” from Clause H. If approved, the amendment would revoke the existing exemption that allows non-Muslims to purchase and consume alcohol in Pakistan.
The bill was submitted to the National Assembly Secretariat and is expected to be reviewed in accordance with parliamentary procedures. Currently, Pakistan bans alcohol for Muslims but allows regulated sales to non-Muslims under specific legal provisions.
The proposed legislation has the potential to spark debate on religious freedom, minority rights, and constitutional guarantees, as lawmakers and civil society groups closely monitor its progress through parliament.
