Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: The federal government has approved a three-year extension for the tenure of the chairman of the National Accountability Bureau, extending the term of Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Nazir Ahmed until March 2029. The decision follows recent legislative changes permitting term extensions for the accountability body’s leadership.
According to an official notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, the extension will take effect from March 6, 2026, under the provisions of the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999. Authorities stated that the chairman will continue to serve under the same terms and conditions as his current appointment.
The move comes after both houses of parliament—the Senate and the National Assembly—passed amendments to the accountability law, allowing for the extension of the NAB chairman’s tenure. Previously, the legislation did not permit such extensions, and leadership changes occurred upon the completion of fixed terms.
Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Nazir Ahmed was appointed as NAB chairman in March 2023 following the resignation of his predecessor. The bureau is responsible for investigating corruption and financial misconduct in public and private sectors.
Supporters of the amendment argue that continuity in leadership strengthens institutional effectiveness, while critics have raised concerns about potential implications for accountability and oversight. The government has stated that the changes aim to enhance governance and ensure long-term reforms within the accountability framework.
Pakistan continues to pursue reforms in governance and anti-corruption measures as part of broader institutional strengthening efforts.
