Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: Pakistan and Italy have signed an agreement to abolish visa requirements for holders of diplomatic passports, marking a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations, state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported on Tuesday.
The agreement was signed in Rome by Pakistan’s Ambassador to Italy, Ali Javed, and Italy’s Secretary General of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia.
Ahead of the signing, both sides reviewed the full scope of their longstanding diplomatic, political, and economic cooperation, including coordination at multilateral forums such as the United Nations and the European Union.
Officials from both countries described the agreement as a reflection of mutual trust and friendship, adding that it would further enhance diplomatic engagement and facilitate smoother exchanges between official delegations.
The development follows a series of recent high-level engagements between the two countries. Earlier, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited Italy and held meetings with counterparts in Italy, Greece, and Spain, where discussions also included easing visa regimes for Pakistani diplomatic and official passport holders.
In recent years, Pakistan and Italy have expanded cooperation in migration and labour mobility, including a 2024 memorandum of understanding aimed at promoting legal migration pathways and employment opportunities.
Italy has also introduced a labour quota for Pakistani workers, allowing thousands to enter the country for seasonal and non-seasonal employment under regulated schemes.
Diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Italy date back decades and include a long-standing cooperation framework, including a dual nationality agreement signed in the early 1980s.
