Mumbai, India – Web Desk: Concerns over the treatment of religious minorities in India’s BJP-governed state of Maharashtra have intensified following reports of alleged discrimination, economic boycotts, and threats targeting Muslim and Christian communities.
According to reports published by the Hindustan Gazette, Muslims in Arla village of Sangli district have reportedly faced economic hardship after an alleged social and economic boycott by sections of the local community. The report states that following an event held on June 9, local residents either stopped or significantly reduced business dealings with Muslim families.
Separately, The Indian Express reported that Maharashtra Finance Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced that land owned by Christian missionary organizations would be subject to government scrutiny. The announcement came days after a Christian delegation reportedly approached Mumbai Police seeking protection over alleged threats from Hindu extremist groups.
Human rights activist Harsh Mander has expressed concern over the situation, stating that policies promoted by the BJP and the RSS have contributed to an environment where Muslims and Christians increasingly feel marginalized.
Rights groups and activists continue to raise concerns over the protection of minority communities in India, urging authorities to ensure equal rights, religious freedom, and the rule of law.
