Yangon, Myanmar – Web Desk: A powerful explosion in Myanmar’s Shan State has killed at least 55 people, including 25 women, and injured dozens more, according to local media reports and statements from regional authorities.
The blast occurred in Kong Tet, an area under the control of ethnic armed groups in Shan State. Reports indicated that the explosion may have involved materials stored for mining operations, although the exact cause remains under investigation.
The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), an armed group engaged in conflict with Myanmar’s military government, said in a statement that the explosion was accidental. The group confirmed multiple fatalities and injuries and reported damage to civilian homes in the area.
The TNLA expressed condolences to the families of those killed and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. It also announced an investigation into the incident, pledging action against those found responsible and promising assistance to affected families.
Local media reported that the victims included 25 women and 30 men. Witnesses described the explosion as extremely powerful, with some initially believing the area had come under an airstrike due to the intensity of the blast.
The incident adds to ongoing security and humanitarian challenges in Myanmar, where armed conflict and instability continue to affect several regions.
