New Delhi, India — Web Desk: India’s capital, New Delhi, is witnessing a worrying rise in missing persons cases, according to recent reports published by Indian media outlets. The data has raised questions about public safety and law enforcement effectiveness in the city.
Indian newspaper The Hindu reported that more than 800 people were reported missing in New Delhi during the first 15 days of January this year, highlighting persistent concerns over crime and security in the national capital.
According to the report, an estimated 8 percent of people and around 10 percent of children go missing in Delhi, with more than 60 individuals, including 16 children, reported missing daily. Between 2017 and 2023, authorities recorded an annual average of around 13,000 missing women and 4,000 minor girls in the city.
The newspaper further noted that many children reported missing in previous years have yet to be recovered, reflecting challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in tracing victims and preventing disappearances.
Experts cited by the report warned that administrative shortcomings and systemic gaps in law enforcement could contribute to the persistence of missing persons cases. They emphasized the need for stronger policing, improved tracking mechanisms, and comprehensive child protection policies to address the growing concern.
The issue of missing persons in India remains a serious public safety challenge, with advocacy groups urging authorities to enhance coordination between agencies and increase public awareness to prevent disappearances and human trafficking.
