Beirut, Lebanon – Web Desk: Lebanon is set to formally request a one-month extension of its ceasefire agreement with Israel during ongoing US-mediated negotiations, according to media reports citing a senior Lebanese official.
The current 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel is due to expire on Sunday. Officials say the Lebanese delegation will push not only for an extension but also for an end to Israeli airstrikes and the reconstruction of areas affected by recent hostilities.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official told AFP that Lebanon aims to secure guarantees for a lasting ceasefire and ensure compliance mechanisms are in place. The request comes amid heightened regional tensions and continued diplomatic efforts to stabilize the situation.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has also confirmed that diplomatic contacts are underway to extend the truce, signaling broad political backing for the initiative.
The negotiations, being facilitated by the United States, reportedly involve key diplomatic figures, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is playing a central role in mediating between the two sides.
The ceasefire, which began on April 16, has provided a temporary pause in hostilities, but uncertainty remains over its future as both sides weigh next steps. Analysts say the outcome of these talks could have significant implications for regional stability in the Middle East.
