Karachi, Pakistan – Web Desk: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, saying the development could help pave the way for lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.
In a statement, the prime minister praised what he described as the “courageous and wise diplomacy” of US President Donald Trump, saying it played a key role in facilitating the ceasefire agreement.
He reiterated Pakistan’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, adding that Islamabad would continue to back all efforts aimed at achieving durable peace in the region.
US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Lebanon had agreed to a 10-day ceasefire, which he said also involved Hezbollah. He added that Lebanese and Israeli leaders would be invited to the White House, noting that it would mark the first formal talks between the two sides in over three decades.
Following the announcement, celebrations were reported in parts of Lebanon, including Beirut, where residents took to the streets, lighting fireworks and firing celebratory shots. Displaced families in southern Lebanon began returning home, while crowds gathered in Sidon to mark the development.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed hope that the ceasefire would open the door to broader negotiations and a long-term resolution of the conflict.
