Karachi, Pakistan – Web Desk: Authorities in Karachi have uncovered a large-scale illegal water theft network operating beneath the Lasbela Bridge, in a joint operation conducted by the water utility and Pakistan Rangers.
According to a spokesperson, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), in coordination with the Rangers, discovered an underground system used to illegally extract water from a 33-inch main supply line.
Officials said the operation revealed a concealed 30-foot-deep tank connected to the main pipeline through a hidden tunnel, allowing direct theft of clean drinking water. During the raid, authorities recovered an 80-horsepower high-suction pump and a 4-inch pipeline used in the illegal extraction system.
Water samples taken from the site showed a total dissolved solids (TDS) level of 450, confirming that the stolen water was treated municipal supply rather than subsoil water, according to technical experts.
The network was reportedly operating multiple illegal connections linked to the system, all of which have now been sealed. Further investigations are underway.
Authorities have registered a case against suspects identified as Shakil Mehar and Ibrahim. Officials also revealed that Shakil Mehar’s network was involved in large-scale water theft and unpaid dues amounting to approximately 100 million rupees.
The water utility stated that timely action prevented significant loss of public resources and reaffirmed its commitment to taking strict action against those involved in illegal water distribution and theft.
Officials said efforts will continue to ensure transparent and equitable water supply for citizens across the city.
