Tokyo, Japan – Web Desk: Japan has issued a tsunami warning after a powerful earthquake struck its northern region, raising concerns about further seismic activity and potential aftershocks.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency and the United States Geological Survey, the quake—measuring between 7.4 and 7.7 in magnitude—hit northeastern coastal areas, including Hokkaido and Aomori.
Authorities warned that tsunami waves of up to 3 metres could impact parts of northeastern Japan, with expected wave heights ranging from 1 to 3 metres along vulnerable coastal zones.
The Japanese government has also issued a special advisory, warning of a heightened risk of another major earthquake, potentially exceeding magnitude 8.0, in the coming days or weeks.
Initial tsunami activity has already been recorded. Waves measuring 0.8 metres struck the port of Kuji Port, while 0.4-metre waves were reported at Miyako Port. Officials cautioned that sea levels could continue to rise.
Evacuation orders have been issued for more than 171,000 residents across five regions as a precautionary measure.
Authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, although some areas experienced temporary power outages.
Emergency services remain on high alert, and residents have been urged to follow official guidance and avoid coastal areas amid the ongoing tsunami risk.
