Jerusalem, Israel – Web Desk: Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, has approved a controversial law allowing the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of killing Israeli citizens. The legislation is being hailed as a major victory for the country’s far-right political factions, which have long pushed for stricter measures against Palestinian attackers.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally attended the parliamentary session and voted in favor of the bill. The new law stipulates that Palestinians in the occupied West Bank convicted of murdering Israeli civilians will face execution.
The legislation also grants Israeli courts the authority to impose either the death penalty or life imprisonment on Israeli citizens convicted of similar crimes. Notably, the law applies only to future cases and does not have retroactive effect.
Human rights organizations in Israel and Palestine have strongly criticized the law, describing it as racially discriminatory and unlikely to deter attacks. Arab media reports indicate that the law may face legal challenges in Israel’s Supreme Court.
Observers note that the move is likely to intensify tensions in the region, as debates continue over security measures, human rights, and the rule of law.
