Iran Strikes US Tanker in Persian Gulf Amid Rising Gulf Tensions

Date:

Tehran, Iran – Web Desk: Iran’s navy reportedly targeted a U.S.-flagged tanker in the northern Persian Gulf today, in retaliation for a recent U.S. attack on an Iranian warship near Sri Lanka, officials said.

Iranian state television reported that the missile strike hit the tanker, causing a fire that continues to burn. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed full control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean.

The UK Maritime Trade Organization (UKMTO) confirmed that a tanker near Kuwait’s coast experienced a significant explosion on its port side, after which a small boat was seen departing the area. The organization noted oil leakage from the cargo tank, which may pose environmental risks.

Crew members reportedly remain safe, and no immediate injuries were reported. Independent verification of the attack by international sources, including the BBC, is pending. The United States has not yet confirmed or denied the incident. Iran has indicated further details will be released soon.

This attack comes amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region, following coordinated U.S.-Israel strikes on February 28, which killed Iran’s top military leaders, including the defense minister, army chief, IRGC commander, and members of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s family.
