Tehran, Iran – Web Desk: Iran has firmly rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that Tehran requested the continuation of negotiations with Washington, with the Foreign Ministry clarifying that Iran made no such approach and that any US violation of the June 17 memorandum of understanding (MoU) would be met with reciprocal action .
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated on Friday that “the Islamic Republic of Iran has made no request for negotiations with the United States,” contradicting Trump’s social media post in which he claimed Iran had asked to continue “talks” and that Washington had agreed—while simultaneously declaring that the ceasefire was “over” .
Iran Accepted Only Mediator Visit
Baghaei explained that Iran, “in line with its longstanding responsible approach,” had accepted a request from a regional mediator—Qatar—to visit Tehran and discuss the latest developments, with consultations taking place in Mashhad earlier in the day . This was not a request for negotiations with the US, he emphasized.
Reciprocal Response Warning
The spokesperson warned that any breach of commitments by Washington would trigger immediate reciprocal measures from Tehran. “Iran’s policy remains based on the principle of ‘commitment for commitment,'” Baghaei said, adding that “any breach of commitments by Washington will be met with reciprocal action by Iran” .
Baghaei accused Washington of repeatedly violating the 14-point MoU signed on June 17, specifically describing US military strikes on Wednesday and Thursday as a “gross violation” of the agreement’s first and second clauses calling for an end to military operations. He also cited new sanctions and the cancellation of Iran’s oil sales license as additional breaches .
Conflicting Diplomatic Signals
The Iranian response comes amid heightened tensions following two days of US airstrikes on Iranian targets and Iranian retaliatory attacks on US military installations in Kuwait and Bahrain. While Trump claims Iran requested to continue negotiations, Tehran’s position appears uncompromising, with Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf stating earlier that the “confrontation will never end with Iran’s surrender” .
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi echoed the government’s position, posting on X that “there can only be mutual compliance” and accusing the US Treasury Secretary of violating Paragraph 9 of the MoU .
