Iran Demands UN Hold US Accountable for ‘Illegal Aggression’ in Emergency Session

Date:

United Nations, New York – Web Desk: Iran has called on the United Nations to hold the United States accountable for its “illegal actions” and to take effective and decisive measures in response, following an emergency Security Council meeting convened amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region .

Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s permanent representative to the UN, told the Security Council that the United States bears “full and unequivocal responsibility for all consequences arising from its unlawful use of force” . He urged the international body to take immediate, effective, and decisive steps to compel Washington to halt its “continued illegal aggression” and prevent further escalation .

Emergency Session Amid Escalation
The Security Council convened the emergency meeting following two days of US military strikes across five Iranian provinces, which Iranian officials said killed at least 14 people and injured 78 others . Iran has retaliated with attacks on US military installations in Kuwait and Bahrain, further heightening regional instability.

At the meeting, Iravani described the US-Israeli strikes as a “blatant act of aggression” and “a full-fledged violation of international law,” accusing Washington of deliberately targeting civilian areas . “No justification, no accusation, no narrative of disinformation can legitimize or excuse this manifest crime and aggression,” he stated .

International Support for De-escalation
Several Security Council members expressed deep concern over the escalation. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the strikes and Iran’s retaliatory attacks, urging “all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table” and warning that military action risks igniting “a chain of events that no one can control” .

China’s UN representative Fu Cong said Beijing is “deeply concerned” about the escalation, opposing and condemning the use of force in international relations . Russia’s ambassador condemned the strikes as a “deliberate, premeditated, and unprovoked act of armed aggression against a sovereign and independent UN member state” .

Violations of Islamabad MoU Cited
Iranian officials have specifically accused the United States of violating the June 17 Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which had established a framework for ceasefire and negotiations . Iravani stated that US strikes constitute “a flagrant violation of Article 2(4) of the Charter of the United Nations and a material breach of paragraph 1 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” .

The diplomatic confrontation at the UN comes as regional mediators, including Pakistan and Qatar, continue efforts to salvage the peace process .
