Iran Accuses US of Violating Peace Deal with Strikes on Coastal Radar Sites

Date:

Tehran, Iran – Web Desk: Iran’s foreign ministry has accused the United States of violating the recently signed Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding by striking Iranian coastal radar and surveillance installations near the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions despite the fragile ceasefire .

According to a statement released by the ministry, the American strikes targeted “coastal surveillance installations” and missile storage locations in response to an Iranian drone attack on a Singapore-flagged cargo vessel near the Strait of Hormuz on June 25. The US military said its aircraft struck “Iranian missiles and drone storage locations and coastal radar sites” after the cargo ship was hit by an Iranian drone while exiting the strait along the Omani coast .

The Iranian foreign ministry described the American strikes as “a clear violation” of the memorandum, which had been signed earlier this month in Switzerland following intensive Pakistani mediation and had brought a temporary halt to hostilities .

Iran’s Response and Warnings

According to the statement, Iranian forces carried out defensive operations against targets associated with the US in response to the American attacks.

The ministry also issued a stark warning to Gulf states, urging them not to allow their territory to be used for any attacks against Iran. “Countries on the southern coast of the Gulf should not allow their land to be used for any attack against Iran,” the statement said, according to Iranian media.

Context of the Violation

The US-Iran peace agreement, titled the Islamabad Memorandum, had stipulated the “immediate and permanent” cessation of all military operations on all fronts and mandated the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz . However, the latest tit-for-tat strikes threaten to unravel the fragile ceasefire and jeopardize the upcoming negotiations aimed at resolving Iran’s nuclear program and broader regional tensions.

The incident occurred as the International Maritime Organization was coordinating a plan to evacuate stranded seafarers through the strait. The agency paused the evacuation plan after the cargo vessel attack .
